James Clear: Obvious Cues, Attractive Cravings, Easy Response, Satisfying Reward
<< Habits are essentially autopilot scripts your brain writes to decrease the cognitive load of solving recurring problems … As Jocko Willink says, "discipline equals freedom." People without a grasp on their habits are those with the least amount of freedom.
First, the cue triggers your brain to initiate a behavior.
Make the CUE OBVIOUS.
This indication triggers a craving, which is the motivational force behind every habit.
Make the CRAVING ATTRACTIVE.
Third, the response is the actual behavior that is performed,
Make the RESPONSE EASY
and finally:
the reward – the end goal of every habit
Make it SATISFYING.
The first two steps, cue and craving, are the problem phase, and the last two steps, response and reward, are the solution phase, you satisfy your craving and feel relieved. >> ~ Atomic Habits by James Clear
